Navigating the Conduct Process
Navigating the Conduct Process for Students
Did you receive a letter from the Dean of Students office charging you with an alleged violation of the Student Code of Conduct? Are you wondering what your future at OU now looks like? It can be overwhelming to receive a charge letter and many questions can quickly arise. We recommend taking a deep breath, our office is not the “Principal’s Office”. The Dean of Students office’s role is to help guide students and all parties involved through the conduct process. We are here to help you succeed at OU.
After receiving your letter, these are ways the Dean of Students office can best support you:
- Schedule your meeting (in-person or virtual) with the Dean of Students representative that sent you the letter by calling 248-370-3352. During the meeting you will discuss the allegations, how the events transpired on your end and your
Due Process. From there, we will give you space to accept or deny responsibility, which will ultimately lead you to the
type of hearing needed.
Note: Students are required to schedule the meeting within two business days of receiving their initial letter. After a failed second attempt at contact, the process moves on without student input. - All communication is sent to your OU email address. If you are having trouble retrieving your letter, use your GID as your passcode. If you continue to have issues, please contact us.
- Students can also have an adviser for support. An adviser must be someone enrolled or employed on campus (academic adviser, faculty, staff or another OU student). Advisers do not participate in hearings. If you feel you need a support person present and are unsure who to have as an adviser, please let us know and we will do our best to help find you one.
- Try not to focus on the outcome and disciplinary actions. Instead, consider the factors that led to the allegation and how you can handle these situations in the future.
- The hold we put on your account will be removed once your hearing has taken place. If it is during registration, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your options with the hold as we are not trying to prevent you from future enrollment.
