Student Accommodations

The Disability Support Services (DSS) Office supports students with disabilities at Oakland University. DSS facilitates appropriate academic accommodations, auxiliary aids and services that are necessary to afford an individual with a disability an equal opportunity to participate in the University’s programs and activities.

What is a disability?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a person with a disability as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Major life activities are basic activities that most people can perform with little to no difficulty, including walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, caring for oneself or performing manual tasks. Disabilities may be acquired at any time and are an aspect of life and diversity.

How do I receive services for my disability?

If you are an Oakland University student and you have a disability, you can register with DSS by completing the online registration form, and you may be eligible to receive accommodations. While the university provides reasonable accommodations, we cannot change essential academic requirements or job functions. Accommodation determinations are based on documentation and individualized meetings.

What will I receive to verify my accommodations?

Students who are approved for accommodations will receive an accommodation letter that includes verification of registration status with DSS and an outline of reasonable accommodations. Accommodation letters need to be renewed each semester to maintain eligibility for services.
