Fraternity and Sorority Life

Oakland University has a vibrant Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) community on campus. This community consists of 17 fraternities and sororities that are governed by our four different FSL councils: College Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Oakland Fraternity Council, and Greek Council. Each organization, or chapter,  is unique in its own values, ideals, philanthropy, rituals, and more. Oakland University students have the opportunity to join the FSL community at any point during their undergraduate career and create bonds that will last a lifetime.

Throughout the school year our fraternities and sororities hold different events that focus on philanthropy, service, and brotherhood/sisterhood. Some events are even planned to strengthen bonds with other FSL organizations of the same or different councils. Joining a fraternity or sorority will not only help you create bonds with like minded individuals but will help you grow and develop as an individual and leader. This college experience will help you to get involved with volunteer based organizations, obtain academic support, and create connections with those in and out of your chapter.

A current list of fraternity and sorority officer information is available in GrizzOrgs. For more information contact [email protected].

Greek Council is the governing body for all Greek-lettered organizations that fall under the Fraternity and Sorority Life umbrella. This council's purpose is to create unity among the different chapters and councils while also contributing to the personal development of each individual member. Greek Council holds different events to bring Fraternity and Sorority members together, their biggest one being Greek Week, which is held every spring. Those who are on Greek Council serve as a key communicator for all things Fraternity and Sorority Life while also working to better the community of Oakland University. Greek Council consists of an executive board, committee chairs, and chapter representatives. These leaders work collaboratively to support their member organizations and have meetings one Sunday a month at 2 pm.

For more information, contact Greek Council advisor, Stephanie Jurva [email protected] or visit Greek Council's GrizzOrgs or Facebook page.

The National Panhellenic Council is the umbrella organization for 26 different national and international sororities, of which there are 5 at Oakland University. Our Panhellenic Council consists of Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Sigma Tau, Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Sigma Sigma. The members of our chapters strive to make a positive impact on campus by serving the community, aiming for high academic standards, and bettering the lives of individual members. The Panhellenic Council puts on several events throughout the school year that focus on service, philanthropy, and sisterhood. Once joining a Panhellenic sorority there are 3 different ways to get more involved in the Panhellenic Council. These opportunities include: joining the Panhellenic executive board, becoming a committee chair, and being the Panhellenic representative for your respective chapter. The Panhellenic Council general body meetings take place every other Sunday at 4 pm.

To learn more about the Panhellenic Council please reach out to the current President, Izzy Davis at [email protected] or check out the council's website or GrizzOrgs page.

The Oakland Fraternity Council consists of three national/international fraternities that fall under the North American Interfraternity Council. These fraternities include Alpha Sigma Phi, Sigma Pi, and Theta Chi. On campus, the Oakland Fraternity Council is seen putting on different social and philanthropic events that are open to the student body as well as brotherhood events that strengthen their own bonds. The Oakland Fraternity Council chapters strive to better the communities they're a part of while focusing on leadership and scholarship. The general body meetings of the Oakland Fraternity Council take place every other Sunday at 3 pm. To get more involved in the Oakland Fraternity Council after joining a chapter, one could run for an executive board position or become their chapters representative.

Chapters:

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is made up of nine traditionally African American sororities and fraternities known as the Divine Nine. Oakland University currently has seven of the Divine Nine including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. The nine organizations were created as a safe haven for African American students in a time where they were not offered the same opportunities as white students. The National Pan-Hellenic Council still focuses on fostering social change and taking action within the community. Though the National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters are historically Black, people of any background are allowed to be initiated. Two of the biggest events that Oakland University's National Pan-Hellenic Council puts on are a yearly fashion show and a yard show. Once joining a National Pan-Hellenic Council chapter, one can get more involved in the chapter by joining the executive board. The council holds meetings once a month on Sundays at 6 pm.

To learn more about the National Pan-Hellenic Council please reach out to the current President, Malik Williams at [email protected] or visit the National Pan-Hellenic Council's GrizzOrgs page.
