THE PRESIDENT'S EXECUTIVE ORDERS AND THE AFTERMATH - UPDATES
June 2, 2025
For our Education Faculty – an update

As you surely know, in 2002 Congress established the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), a semi-independent division of the Department of Education. By conducting, supporting, and disseminating high-quality, evidence-based research, IES has been the cornerstone of research on education in America for over 20 years.

In February, the Department of Education — now being run by former professional wrestling magnate Linda McMahon — began dismantling IES by cancelling dozens of contracts for research studies and support services vital to the agency’s functioning. In March, roughly 90% of IES employees were notified that they would be terminated.

On April 4, 2025 lawsuits were filed representing education researchers, practitioners, and organizations in federal court challenging the administration’s illegal attempt to shut down IES.  As with most of these Executive Orders, it was put under a Restraining Order very quickly.  On May 16, the court began the hearing on a motion for the stronger preliminary injunction.

OU does not at the moment manage any IES funding; it is a difficult nut to crack, to be sure.  However, several professors in the School are well on their way to being well-positioned for pursuing this funding.  The fate of the IES is worth tracking, even though we do not currently have this funding.

Where we have information pertinent to a particular PI, we will be contacting you directly.  And, of course, you should also feel free to reach out to us.  Use one of these email addresses and we will respond to you as soon as possible:
