Admissions and Auditions

Fee Free Institution

Oakland University is a no-fee institution. There is no cost to apply for admission or to register for an audition.

Questions Regarding the Audition Process

Required Steps for Admission

There are two steps to becoming a Major in the School of Music, Theatre and Dance:

    1. Apply and be accepted to the University through Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate Admissions. Prospective students should complete this application (all application materials submitted) at least two weeks prior to your audition date. Apply to the University.
    2. Present a successful audition for your prospective area.

Transfer Students

To transfer into the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, follow Steps 1 and 2 as outlined above. You will be requested to provide unofficial transcripts for any music, theatre or dance courses that you would like to transfer credits for. Someone from our administrative office will reach out to you to ensure the proper process is followed.

International Students

Most international students are required to pass the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). For more information about requirements for international students, visit the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) website.

Audition Registration for Fall 2026 Admission

The registration form for auditions for the 2026/2027 academic year will open on September 1st, 2025. Please check back here after this date to register for an audition.

Audition Dates

Oakland University School of Music, Theatre and Dance will be hosting in-person live auditions and interviews on the following dates:

  • Saturday, January 31, 2026
  • Saturday, February 21, 2026
  • Saturday, March 21, 2026

Note: While you are able to declare an SMTD major when you apply to the university, you must also pass an audition for most degree programs. If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to reach out to Alex Sellers using the methods above.

Music Department Audition Guidelines

Interviews at Auditions

All music auditions include an interview with the respective faculty members present. If you are auditioning for the Music Technology major, you will have a separate interview scheduled to speak with the Music Technology faculty and present your portfolio.

Music Theory Placement Exam

As part of the audition, you will be required to take a music theory placement exam. This exam has no bearing on whether you are admitted or not. It is just to place you into the correct theory course should you enroll in the music department. You will have 1 hour at your audition to complete this. Piano Placement Exam

You are not required to take a piano placement exam. However, if you would like to place into a higher level of piano techniques class, you may take the piano placement exam. Please contact Lois Kaarre at [email protected].

Voice Audition Requirements

Audition Requirements

  • Two songs in contrasting styles
  • Interview with Vocal Faculty

Song Requirements

Prepare two memorized songs in contrasting styles with piano accompaniment. Classical, folk, or foreign language songs are welcome; one musical theatre piece may be substituted. You may bring your own accompanist or use a staff accompanist at no charge (music must be in a 3-ring binder if using ours).

Repertoire Guidelines

Classical song literature and folksong arrangements such as those listed in the MSVMA Solo and Ensemble list and the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) high school audition requirements would be considered appropriate. 

Piano Accompaniment for Video Auditions 

Candidates should use an accompaniment track, which can often be found on YouTube. You may also choose to purchase an app such as Appcompanist, which offers a large library of classical and musical theatre accompaniments.

Brass and Woodwind Audition Requirements

Audition Requirements

  • One movement of a sonata or concerto or
  • Two contrasting etudes
  • Sight reading

Pianist

Auditions will be unaccompanied. There is no need to bring a pianist.

Piano Audition Requirements

Audition Requirements

  • One piece from the Baroque era
  • One first-movement from a Classical Sonata
  • One free-choice piece from the Romantic through 21st Century repertoire
  • Sight reading
  • Scales and arpeggios

Memorization

All pieces must be memorized at the audition.

Additional Requirements

Bring a resume/CV and a list of previously learned repertoire to your audition. If these documents were uploaded with your audition registration, you do not need to bring printed copies.

Percussion Audition Requirements

Audition Requirements

  • Solo repertoire
  • Sight reading and/or a brief aural skills assessment may be required.

Repertoire Guidelines

Please prepare 5-15 minutes of solo repertoire that best highlights your strengths as a percussionist. Audition must demonstrate proficiency in snare drum, keyboard percussion, and an additional third area, which may be selected from timpani, drumset, or accessory/world percussion.

Required:
Snare Drum: Concert and/or Rudimental solos (Suggestions: Peters: Intermediate Snare Drum Studies, Wilcoxon: Modern Rudimental Swing Solos)
Keyboard Percussion: 2-mallet and/or 4-mallet solos (Suggestions: Bach: Cello Suites & Violin Sonatas and Partitas, Hopper: Ghost Garden, Peters: Soundscapes, Ford: Technique through Music)

Choose One:
Timpani: Solos, Etudes, or Orchestral Excerpt Repertoire (Hochrainer: Etudes for Timpani)
Drumset: Demonstrate various styles (e.g. Pop, Rock, Jazz, Latin)
Accessory/World Percussion: Orchestral Excerpts, Latin American and/or African hand drumming styles, Steel Pan, etc.

Instruments to be provided

  • Concert Snare Drum
  • 5-octave Marimba One
  • 3-octave Yamaha vibraphone
  • 4 Adams Philharmonic Timpani (Clutch Style Pedals)
  • 4-piece Drum Kit with 2 Cymbals and Hi-Hat

Other instruments such as hand percussion and steel pans available upon request (please email Dr. Justin Lamb prior to your audition).

String Audition Requirements (including guitar)

Audition Requirements

  • Two contrasting works
  • Sight reading

Repertoire Guidelines

Please prepare at least two contrasting works from the following three choices: (1) a movement from a J.S. Bach solo sonata, partita or suite, or other Baroque work; (2) a movement from a 19th or 20th century sonata or concerto; (3) a work of the student’s choice.

Music Technology

Audition Requirements

  • Portfolio/resume presentation
  • Interview with Faculty

Portfolio Requirements

Candidates for the Music Technology program will present a portfolio or resume of their work to the faculty. The portfolio or resume should highlight previous experience with music technology, such as live event production, original compositions, and/or recording projects. Be sure to list any software and hardware used in these projects. During the presentation, candidates will have the opportunity to share their interests, prior work experience, and career goals.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the portfolio or resume presentation, candidates must audition on their major instrument (voice, guitar, or any band or orchestra instrument). Please refer to the audition requirements for your specific area for detailed guidelines.

Jazz Minor Audition Requirements

Horns

  • Demonstrate major scales to 3#’s and 3b’s - 2 octaves.
  • Play the melody to Billie's Bounce and improvise over its blues form in the concert key of F at 110-130 bpm
  • Choose one of the following jazz standards to play the melody and solo on:
    • Oleo, My Romance, How High the Moon, Take the "A" Train, Blue Bossa, Afternoon In Paris

 Piano & Guitar

  • Demonstrate all 12 major scales and all 12 major 7, minor 7, and dominant 7 chords.
  • Play the melody and chords to Billie's Bounce and improvise over its blues form in the concert key of F at 110-130 bpm 
  • Choose one of the following jazz standards to play the melody, chords and solo on:
    • Oleo, My Romance, How High the Moon, Take the "A" Train, Blue Bossa, Afternoon In Paris

Bass

  • Demonstrate major scales to 3#’s and 3b’s.
  • Play the melody and walk a bass line to Billie's Bounce. Improvise over its blues form in the concert key of F at 110-130 bpm
  • Choose one of the following jazz standards to walk a bass line on:
    • Oleo, My Romance, How High the Moon, Take the "A" Train, Blue Bossa, Afternoon In Paris

Jazz Percussion

*If you are auditioning for the Music Tech, Music Education, or Music Performance majors, please consult the “Percussion Audition Requirements” above.

Prepare a 4–6 minute medley that demonstrates a variety of styles on drumset. Styles may include, but are not limited to, Medium Swing, Medium-Fast Swing, Slow Swing (walking ballad), Straight Ballad (with brushes), Shuffle, Funk, Bossa Nova, Samba, & Odd Meter (7/8, 5/4, etc). During the medley, please also demonstrate soloing vocabulary through trading fours in any of the above styles.

OPTIONAL: Demonstrate experience with keyboard mallet percussion (e.g. vibraphone), hand percussion (i.e. congas, bongos, etc.), and/or other concert percussion (e.g. snare drum, timpani).

If you wish to demonstrate your experience with hand percussion, please request instruments by emailing [email protected] prior to your audition.

Vocalists

  • Demonstrate major scales to 3#’s and 3b’s - 2 octaves.
  • Scat the melody to Billie's Bounce and improvise over its blues form in the concert key of F or Bb at 110-130 bpm
  • Be able to demonstrate basic piano skills, like identifying notes, intervals, and triads.
  • Sing the melody to one of the following songs:
    • All of Me, Bye Bye Blackbird, Fly Me to the Moon, Lullaby of Birdland, Our Love is Here to Stay, Summertime

Prospective jazz minors who are not yet ready to audition are encouraged to enroll in applied (private) lessons on their instrument to prepare. Once accepted into the program, this semester of coursework can be applied toward the requirements for the minor.

Theatre Program Audition Guidelines


At Oakland University, auditioning for the Theatre program is an opportunity for you to show your personality, your strengths and the traits that make you a unique performer/technician. The more prepared you are, the more confident and focused you will be. This goes for pre-recorded auditions as well as in-person auditions. Relax and be yourself. We want to see your passion and personality!

For additional guidelines and suggestions to assist in your audition preparation, please see the information below. The below guidelines are for in-person auditions.

The Musical Theatre Audition

Requirements

  • Two songs in contrasting styles
  • One monologue
  • Group dance call
  • Interview with faculty

Musical Theatre Common Prescreen

Song Requirements

  • One song written before 1970 (musical theater, Golden Age, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.).
  • One song written after 1970 (musical theater, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.). This song should contrast the style of the first selection.

Monologue Requirements

  • One contemporary monologue from a published play or written by a professional writer. (A professional writer is someone whose plays have been produced, but may not have been professionally published.)

Dance Call

  • One week before the audition, candidates will receive a link to a dance video to prepare. They will have one week to learn the choreography and present it at their audition. No custom choreography is required.
The Acting Audition

Requirements

  • Two monologues in contrasting styles
  • Group movement call
  • Interview with faculty

Monologues

Candidates will prepare two contrasting monologues (i.e. comic/ dramatic, classical/contemporary). They should not exceed 4 minutes combined. Candidates should select monologues that show different abilities highlighting the candidate’s strengths. Monologues must be memorized and should not be in a dialect. Monologues should be from a play.

Movement Call

The movement call requires no prior preparation and will consist of a warm-up followed by a series of physical exercises led by a faculty member. Candidates should bring basic rehearsal attire that will allow for ease of movement. No bulky or oversized sweatpants or sweatshirts are permitted. Candidates should bring jazz shoes if they have them. Bare feet is also appropriate. Street shoes may not be worn on the dance floor.

The Design and Technology Portfolio Presentation

Candidates for the Design and Technology Program will present a portfolio of their work to the faculty. It may be in an electronic or hard copy format. The portfolio should show your previous theatrical and artistic projects in a detailed and organized manner. Any artwork that is an example of your creative process is encouraged.

The presentation allows candidates to share their interests, previous work experience, and career goals. Candidates should dress in a professional manner.

The BA Theatre Degree

The BA in Theatre degree is designed to be a comprehensive overview of Theatre Arts. Our theatre degree combines theoretical and hands-on theatrical training with a broad, versatile liberal education. No audition is required for this degree; however, we do ask that you please fill out an audition request form so that we can schedule a time to meet with you regarding the program. Theatre Video Audition Guidelines

All video auditions for Theatre, regardless of selected program of study, should follow the audition guidelines outlined here.

 

Dance Program Audition Guidelines
Dance Program Auditions are held several times a year. Our program includes:

  • All levels of ballet, modern and jazz technique
  • Emphasis on performance, choreography and teaching
  • Courses in kinesiology, dance history, career planning and teaching techniques
  • Resident professional company, Eisenhower Dance
  • Resident pre-professional company, OU Repertory Dance Company
  • Many performance opportunities including two annual main-stage concerts
  • Apprenticeships available in the professional company

For Your Audition

  • Dancers should dress in leotards and tights (women), gym pants and T-shirts (men). Please, no loose clothing.
  • Dancers should bring ballet and jazz shoes, and be prepared to dance in bare feet.
  • The audition will consist of ballet, modern and jazz combinations that will be demonstrated for you.
  • You are required to perform a one minute solo in either modern, ballet or jazz technique.
  • Please have the music for your solo on a mobile device.
  • You will have a brief private interview with the dance faculty.
  • Please allow approximately 3-4 hours to complete the audition process.

Vocal Auditions

Requirement Details

Present four songs or arias from memory in a variety of styles and languages (typically English, Italian, German, and French) that showcase your voice to its best advantage. Singers may bring their own accompanist or use one of our staff accompanists at no charge. If using a staff accompanist, printed copies of all audition pieces must be placed in a 3-ring binder.
