Dr. Rebecca Happel, OU applied piano, accompanying, and chamber music instructor, has performed as a soloist, duo-pianist, and collaborative pianist in the U.S. and in Europe. Locally, she has performed as soloist with the Ann Arbor Symphony, Jackson Symphony Orchestra, and Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony. She is a frequent performer in chamber music recitals, on series including the Scarab Club and Meadowbrook Music, with an emphasis on vocal repertoire. In addition to teaching at Oakland University, Dr. Happel also taught as part of the applied piano faculty at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Mich. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she studied with the late Leon Fleischer, Gary Graffman, and Gyorgy Sandor, protégé of Bela Bartok. She also holds certification from the Music Conservatory of Vienna, Austria. While in Austria, she performed frequently as a soloist and in chamber concerts. She has trained in opera coaching at DePaul University, with renowned conductors Eduardo Muller and Jeffrey Tate, and has served on the music staff of the Cincinnati Opera and Detroit Opera. A frequent lecturer, she is also in demand as an adjudicator throughout the state and beyond, Her students have performed and studied in prestigious programs and festivals in the U.S. and Europe.
