Sustainability and Community
Sustainability may initially seem complex, but its core principles are accessible and essential for fostering a balanced and equitable future. While the systems, research, and global actions behind the Sustainability movement are diverse, central themes unite this field, guiding individuals and organizations toward meaningful action.
- Our current living practices are unsustainable, with far-reaching consequences that demand immediate attention.
- Environmental Sustainability extends beyond climate change, encompassing threats such as microplastics, ocean acidification, ecosystem degradation, and species extinction.
- Effective change must be systemic and collective, as environmental challenges are deeply interconnected with social, political, and cultural issues.
- Sustainability is inseparable from justice issues such as racism, sexism, colonization, and economic inequality. These problems must be addressed together for meaningful environmental progress.
Education is a critical tool for transitioning toward a more just, sustainable world. It provides the structure for teaching and learning outcomes that inspire positive change and support transformative thinking.
Student Outcomes for Education for Sustainability:

- Emotional Transformation: Engaging emotional connections enables deeper learning and greater engagement with local environments and cultures.
