Faircloth Lecture Series

The Faircloth Lecture Series is a collaborative program joining Oakland University's Department of Counseling and the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in interdisciplinary conversations that further the goal of enhancing communication and interaction between doctors and patients and patients' loved ones. The lecture series is funded by the family of Dr. Patrick Faircloth, a M.A. and Ph.D. graduate of the Department of Counseling.

2017 | Gonzalo Bacigalupe
Dr. Bacigalupe is professor of counseling psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and is the recipient of the 2016 APA Carolyn Attneave Diversity Award by the Society of Family Psychology. He has been a co-principal investigator of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute pilot research project titled:  "Influence and evidence: Understanding consumer choices in preventive care." Dr. Bacigalupe is the co-founder and co-chair of the Boston Institute for Culturally Accountable Practices (BICAP), which received the Innovative Training Award for Excellence and Outstanding Achievement in providing quality, clinical training from the  Family Therapy Networker.

 

2015 | Susan Eggly
Susan Eggly is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology at Wayne State University and a Scientist in the Population Studies and Disparities Program at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. She earned her Ph.D. in communication studies at Wayne State University. Dr. Eggly's research focuses on clinician-patient communication and patient outcomes with an emphasis on clinical communication and outcomes related to clinical trials, health disparities, decision-making, pain, health disparities, and parental bereavement.

 

2013 | Rita Charon
Dr. Rita Charon, founder and executive director of the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University, is a general internist and narratologist who completed her M.D. degree at Harvard in 1978 and her Ph.D. in English at Columbia in 1999. Author of Narrative Medicine: Honoring the Stories of Illness (Oxford University Press, 2006), Dr. Charon is internationally recognized for her pioneering work.

 

2012 | Allen Ivey
Dr. Allen Ivey, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at University of Massachusetts Amherst and Professor of Counseling at the University of South Florids, is President/Founder of Microtraining Inc. He is a Diplomat in Counseling Psychology, author or co-author of over 40 books and the developer of the Micro skills approach to studying and teaching interpersonal communication.
