Academic Advising
Your academic adviser is your "go to" support system as you navigate your first year of college. Advisers guide and make recommendations to help you to find success. You are required to meet with your adviser at least once a semester.
Here's how you will work together with your Adviser in your first year.
Your academic adviser will: |
You will need to: |
|---|---|
| Be available to you through scheduled appointments, group advising, drop-in hours, emails and phone calls. | Reach out to your academic adviser or the First Year Advising Center when you need support. Schedule an appointment or attend a group advising session at least once a semester. |
| Recommend courses to help you make progress toward your degree. | Register for classes and adjust your schedule in MySAIL after consulting with your adviser. |
| Connect you to campus resources and academic support. | Tell your academic adviser what you need to be successful and alert them if you think you might be starting to struggle. |
| Explain OU degree and general education requirements. |
Use the catalog and sample schedule to understand your requirements and share any questions you may have with your adviser. |
| Guide you through exploring majors and careers, whether you have a major in mind or are still deciding. | Take action and follow through on the recommendations from your academic adviser, keeping them updated on your progress along the way. |
| Help you understand how incoming college credit or AP/IB/CLEP scores apply to your degree. | Be sure your adviser knows about any previous credit earned or if you plan to take credit elsewhere in the future. |
| Encourage you to get involved and recommend opportunities for you to explore. | Share your goals and interests with your adviser. |
