Midterm Grades for Faculty

Follow these instructions to enter midterm grades (A-F) for full-semester and half-semester courses. The deadline to submit midterm grades falls before the withdrawal deadline, giving students an opportunity to make a more informed decision about continued enrollment in their course(s).

To clarify, a midterm grade is a snapshot of the student's entire course performance at the semester midpoint; They are not intended just to reflect the grade of one midterm examination or project.

The submission windows for the Winter 2026 semester are:

• First-half (8-week) courses: January 20 - February 3
• Full-semester courses: February 17 - March 9
• Second-half (8-week) courses: March 23 - April 6

The windows close at 11:59pm on the dates listed. Entry dates for midterm grades are also posted on the Registrar's Important Dates calendars.

The day after the submission window closes, undergraduate students who have earned at least one midterm grade at or below a C- will be sent an email notification; graduate students who have earned at least one midterm grade at or below a B- will be sent an email notification. 

Due to variability in pedagogy and course design, midterm grades will not be equal predictors of ultimate success in each course a student is enrolled in. As such, it is helpful if you can provide clarity and transparency around how students should interpret and use their midterm grade in your course.

Let your students know prior to the midterm grading period whether or not you will be providing midterm grades via a syllabus statement and/or an announcement in class. 

After midterm grades are posted, take a few minutes in class to provide context and support for your students. The below topics can all be addressed to the entire class. You may also want to follow up individually by email or an in-person meeting with students who are struggling and may benefit from additional support. 

Explain

• What is included in the midterm grade, and what is yet to come? 
• How might a student recover if they have a low midterm grade? 
• Should they consider withdrawing from your class? Please note that any student who is considering withdrawing should talk to their adviser before doing so.

Connect

• Refer students to appropriate academic support resources (e.g., tutoring, supplemental instruction, writing support, academic coaching) to address challenges and improve performance. 
• Recommend that students who are struggling talk to their adviser to develop a plan for the rest of this semester and to discuss implications for future coursework, progression in their program, and time to degree.
