Parent and Supporter Information
Oakland University understands the important role parents and supporters play in their students' transition to college. During New Student Orientation, you and your student will attend sessions together and separately in order to meet the diverse needs of students and their supporters.
Explore our New Student Orientation FAQs to feel confident and prepared as your student begins their journey at OU. If you don’t see your question listed, reach out to us at [email protected] or 248-370-4653.
Your student must register for orientation first. During that process, they can add up to two parents/supporters and include their contact information so they receive communications. Please note, this event is intended for guests ages 16 and up.
There is no cost to attend orientation. Lunch is complimentary for up to two guests per student. Any additional guests are responsible for their own meal costs.
While some parts of the day overlap with your student’s schedule, parents and supporters have their own sessions covering resources, support services and how to best guide your student through the transition to college.
It is important for students to make strong connections with their academic adviser from the start. Therefore, we limit the advising and registration portion to students only.
Your student’s academic adviser will prepare a list of course recommendations based on your student’s academic profile and major. The academic adviser, along with student leaders and faculty, will support your student in the registration process. We welcome students to schedule a follow-up appointment with their academic adviser after orientation and to include their parents/supporters, if desired.
You’ll learn about academic expectations, campus safety, housing and dining, financial aid and billing and the many resources available to support your student’s success.
You can view the full agenda for orientation on our New Student Orientation Agenda page.
The Oakland University website is a great place to find information. If you have a specific question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] or 248-370-GOLD.
Absolutely. We provide newsletters and online resources so you can stay informed and connected throughout your student’s college journey. Parents/supporters who attend orientation will automatically receive these communications. Other parents/supporters can subscribe on our website.
