Research/Scholarship:

Mr. O'Brien’s research interest focuses on how health care professionals' confidence affects the successful management of critically ill patients and, in turn, influences the quality of patient outcomes. Confidence plays a pivotal role in high-stakes medical environments, where rapid decision-making, precise interventions and effective teamwork are essential. Confident clinicians are more likely to act decisively, communicate effectively and apply evidence-based practices under pressure, which reduces medical errors and improves patient safety. Conversely, overconfidence or lack of confidence can hinder critical judgment and collaboration. Investigating the psychological and behavioral dimensions of clinician confidence can therefore inform training, leadership development, and policy initiatives aimed at optimizing both team performance and patient outcomes in critical care settings.
