Located on a picturesque 1,441 acre campus of wooded hills and rolling meadows in Southeastern Michigan, Oakland University is a doctoral/research intensive university.

At the center of main campus, OUWB enjoys close access to the Kresge Library, the Hannah Hall of Science Anatomy Lab, the Oakland Center (student union) and the Recreation Center.

The school, located in O'Dowd Hall, features a medical student lounge and locker facilities, and technologically advanced breakout rooms – all designed to complement our innovative curriculum and in close proximity to medical student services.

The surrounding community offers world-class entertainment, cultural, and social opportunities.

O'Dowd Hall

O'Dowd Hall is named for Donald O'Dowd and his wife Jan O'Dowd. Donald O'Dowd joined OU in 1960 as a founding faculty member of the university's psychology department. He was appointed as dean of the university in 1961 and served as OU's president from 1970 to 1979. Jan O'Dowd was heavily involved in OU, too, assisting in recruiting faculty and fostering a community including faculty and their families, staff and students.

The 105,000-square-foot building is located in the center of Oakland University's campus and consists of five floors. OUWB currently occupies parts of the first, third, and fifth floors, and all of the second and fourth floors. Other spaces in the building are used by the following departments: English; Graduate Program Leadership; Global Management; Modern Languages & Literature; Genetics; and Archeology.

On July 12, 2024, a grand re-opening ceremony was held to mark completion of a $9.7 million renovation and addition.

The OUWB community can find and book O’Dowd Hall spaces utilizing the Robin Powered software. Faculty and staff, based on their roles, can reserve desks, workspaces, and rooms. Students can book certain rooms as well as view the availability of spaces to meet their study or collaboration needs.

OUWB Anatomy Lab

OUWB’s Anatomy Lab is located on the campus of Oakland University, on the third floor of Hannah Hall.

The current state-of-the-art lab opened in 2013, and provides for teaching human medical gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, microbiology, immunology, pathology, physiology and more.

The lab also provides space for interdisciplinary education with medical and physical therapy students, and is used to teach physiology to undergraduate biology students. Further, there is a separate room used for advanced dissection.

It has more than 30 down-draft, stainless-steel tables — each with a donor who has generously donated their body to medical education.

OUWB Eye Research Center

The OUWB Eye Research Center (ERC) is located in Oakland University's Dodge Hall.

In addition to individual investigators' labs, the ERI and OUWB-ERC have a core facility that contains the necessary equipment for morphological, molecular, and functional studies. There are currently four modules and one director for each module: Microscopy Module -The Ocular Structure and Imaging (OSI); In Vivo Imaging Module; Retinal Function Assessment Module; and Cell and Molecular Biology Module.

The Pediatric Retinal Research Laboratory (PRRL) houses a full ocular phenotyping and surgical suite used for characterizing rodent disease models. This includes an additional set of FA/OCT (Bioptigen’s OCT 3). Learn more about the PRRL here.

OUWB Neuroscience Laboratories and Offices

Also located in Dodge Hall is OUWB's first wet laboratory, which opened in 2021.

The lab consists of about 1,200 square feet split between two rooms.

Equipment in the lab includes, among other things, a microfluidic system that allows the researchers to mimic blood vessels in the brain, as well as a cell imaging machine, a super high-powered fluorescent microscope, a 3D printer, a protein analysis machine, incubators, and a freezer. There also is a machine that allows for the researchers to study the effects of cigarette smoke and e-cigarette vapor in vivo using mice models. More about the wet lab can be found here

OUWB Clinical Skills Center

The OUWB Clinical Skills Training & Simulation Center is the primary site for learners to practice and perfect their patient skills in a realistic, state of the art facility. The Clinical Skills Training & Simulation Center is home to 16 simulated patient rooms, separate student and patient assembly areas, classrooms and separate video control and observation suites.
