Kyeorda Kemp, Ph.D.

Kyeorda Kemp is an Associate Professor of Foundational Medical Studies at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Dr. Kemp received her B.S. in Microbiology from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, and a PhD from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. During her time at Northwestern, she was selected for the Graduate Certificate Training Program, where she studied teaching best practices and co-developed and taught a course. She was then selected for the four-year Northwestern University-Select Teaching and Research Training Program for postdoctoral scholars, funded by the National Institutes of Health, which gave her academic experience through teaching and mentoring. After completing her postdoctoral training, her dedication to expanding access to science and medicine led her to accept a faculty position at Northeastern State University of Oklahoma, a rural, primarily undergraduate, Native American-serving institution. In 2019, she joined the Department of Foundational Medical Studies at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) due to its focus on teaching excellence, commitment to inclusion, and dedication to community engagement. At OUWB, she teaches topics in immunology to preclinical medical students in their M1 and M2 years and serves as the Respiratory Organ System Co-Course Director. Dr. Kemp's main scholarly interest focuses on increasing access to and preparedness for science, technology, engineering, math, and medical (STEMM) fields through community outreach and engagement and promoting collaborative and self-regulated learners in science and medicine. However, she continues to conduct research in her field and is currently exploring the impact of dietary patterns on inflammation. In addition to her role as a faculty member at OUWB, Dr. Kemp currently serves as the President of the Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge programs.
