Suzan Kamel-ElSayed, DVM, MS, Ph.D.
Dr. Suzan Kamel-ElSayed is a Tenured Professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB). She joined the faculty in August 2013 as an Associate Professor on the Medical Education Track and has since demonstrated impactful and sustained leadership in academic administration, curriculum development, and scholarly engagement.
Dr. Kamel-ElSayed earned her D.V.M. (Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine with Honors) and M.S. in Endocrine Physiology from Assiut University in Egypt. In 2004, she completed her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the School of Medicine, Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, followed by two postdoctoral research fellowships in bone biology.
Recognized for her commitment to educational excellence and institutional service, Dr. Kamel-ElSayed has earned a Certificate from the OUWB Leadership Institute. She was also the first graduate of OUWB’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Champion initiative and is a nationally certified Team-Based Learning (TBL) Consultant.
Her teaching focuses on Human Physiology and Pathophysiology within OUWB’s integrated organ system-based curriculum. She is known for incorporating multiple interactive teaching methods, including the Dialogical Narrative (DN) approach and Team-Based Learning (TBL), and serves as part of the four-member faculty team overseeing the TBL curriculum across the preclinical years. Passionate about outreach, she also engages with middle and high school students through OUWB’s Diversity and Inclusion pathway programs.
Dr. Kamel-ElSayed’s academic leadership is defined by her dedication to innovative pedagogy, collaborative governance, and inclusive education. She has served as Co-Director for several OUWB organ system courses for nearly a decade; nine years with the Cardiovascular Organ System and currently with the Musculoskeletal, Connective Tissue, and Skin (MSK) course. Her continuous involvement in curriculum leadership underscores her commitment to maintaining the highest standards in preclinical education and institutional improvement. Additionally, she contributes to multiple OUWB committees and subcommittees.
Her current scholarship focuses on Medical Education, particularly in the areas of interactive learning, Team-Based Learning (TBL), self-directed learning (SDL), and the pedagogy of threshold concepts. She is also engaged in research related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), alongside her foundational expertise in Bone Biology.
