Faculty appointments are granted to individuals who are actively involved in the educational program of Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
Recommendations for faculty appointments within the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine are initiated by Department Chairs.
To apply for appointment to all ranks, an individual must meet the following criteria:
- Show evidence of involvement in the educational program
- Have an affiliation with Corewell Health or Oakland University
- Possess an appropriate terminal degree relevant to the discipline under consideration
The school of medicine's faculty appointment process is managed through OUWB's online appointment and promotion system SmartPath.
Candidates interested in a faculty appointment should contact the appropriate Department Chair to initiate the appointment request.
Upon confirmation, the applicant will receive an email to prepare their CV in the SmartPath system.
Types of Appointments
Standard Appointment
- Time limited non-tenure track appointment
- Must maintain active affiliation with Corewell Health or Oakland University
- 3 year renewable appointment
Tenure Track
- Available to Oakland University employed faculty at the rank of Assistant or Associate. Not available to those with a clinical focus.
- Must maintain active employment with Corewell Health or Oakland University
- Assistant Professors must advance to the rank of Associate with tenure
- Tenure track faculty in the rank of Associate are required to seek and obtain tenure within four years of initial appointment
Tenured
- Recognizes an exceptional level of academic achievement at the rank of Associate Professor and Professor
- Granted in seven-year terms; renewable indefinitely
- Subject to post-tenure review

Promotion Training

Promotion Requirements
Instructors applying to the rank of Assistant Professor Promotion Requirements:
- Hold rank of instructor for 2 years or more prior to applying

Assistant Professors applying to the rank of Associate Professor and Associate Professors applying to the rank of Professor Promotion Training Requirements:

Standard Faculty Promotions (Corewell Health-Based): For a standard faculty promotion to the rank of associate OR professor candidates must have completed a minimum of 5 years as an assistant OR associate professor or equivalent at the time the promotion is initiated.
Tenure Track Faculty (Oakland University-Based): Assistant professors must apply for promotion and tenure in the 6th year and achieve promotion and tenure by the 7th year.
Tenured Associate Professors (Oakland University-Based): Tenured associate professors are under no time constraint to apply for promotion to the rank of professor.

Standard Promotions
A standard promotion process depends upon the faculty member's ability to document appropriate achievements in the following areas of academic life:
- Education
- Scholarship
- Service
- Patient Care/Clinical Activities
Faculty members applying to the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor must document excellence in three of the four achievement categories. Faculty members with a Clinician focus must document achievement in Service and two additional achievement categories. Faculty members with a Clinician Investigator or Clinician Educator focus must document achievement in Scholarship, Service and one additional achievement category. Faculty members who are applying for the rank of Professor (all focuses) must document excellence in all four Achievement categories.
Tenure Track - Tenured Promotions
A tenure track-tenured promotion process depends upon the faculty member's ability to document excellence in achievement in all of the following areas of academic life:
- Education
- Scholarship
- Service
General Information for Promotion
Candidates for both standard and tenure track-tenured promotions must specifically document that they have met or exceeded the guidelines for the relevant promotion.
The responsibility to prove that academic promotion has been earned rests with the applicant.
This documentation must be clear and unequivocal as the promotion and/or tenure application is scrutinized at several levels of the School of Medicine and the University to verify that criteria have been met.The OUWB faculty promotion process is announced on an annual basis in the month of March. The process is managed through our faculty data tracking system SmartPath. The system optimizes the promotion process by facilitating web based submissions for the material required for promotion; including but not limited to the promotion application, curriculum vitae (CV), personal statement, achievement summaries and electronic reference solicitation. Faculty who are interested in seeking promotion must meet with the appropriate department chair to discuss readiness. At the appropriate time, supported recommendations for promotion shall be given access to the promotion module in the SmartPath system. OUWB Clinical Faculty and Oakland University Non-Represented Staff Members Emeritus/Emerita
The Oakland University Board of Trustees establishes the status of a) emeritus (or emerita) staff to honor, upon retirement, non-represented staff members including but not limited to the President, Provost, Deans, Academic Administrators, Executives, Administrative Professionals, and other staff (Staff Members); and b) emeritus (or emerita) clinical faculty to honor, upon termination of their status, clinical faculty (Clinical Faculty), who have made long-term contributions to the University and to encourage a continuing relationship with the University. Eligibility for emeritus(a) status shall be governed by the following conditions:
Eligibility
To be eligible for nomination to this status, the Staff Member must have had exemplary continuous honorable full-time service as a Staff Member for at least 15 years prior to retirement; the Clinical Faculty must have provided exemplary continuous honorable service for at least 15 years prior to termination of their status at the university.
In exceptional and rare circumstances, and for demonstrated good cause, emeritus(a) title and status may be awarded to a Staff Member who resigns or retires or a Clinical Faculty who terminates their status prior to completing the minimum years of service requirement as stated above. The case for such an exceptional award must be documented powerfully by the nominating administrative unit and be found persuasive by the President and the Board of Trustees.
Provisions
Emeritus(a) Staff Members and Clinical Faculty shall, as appropriate:
- Be listed in the appropriate University catalog and/or departmental staff listing on the website if he or she so wishes
- Receive a proper identification card indicating the emeritus(a) title and status
- Be invited to attend all University ceremonials, processions, commencements, and convocations as appropriate
- Enjoy such additional rights and privileges as the University may from time-to-time determine
Process
Nomination is to be initiated by the eligible retiree's/resignee's primary administrative/academic unit which should include the nominee's latest resume or curriculum vita and a nomination letter. In the event an administrative unit fails to nominate an eligible individual within one year from their retirement or termination of their status, the dean/supervisor may request a recommendation from the members of the unit or hear an appeal by the individual and may then elect to put forth a nomination.
Revocation: The University may revoke emeritus status in the event the Board of Trustees determines that continued association with the Staff Member or Clinical Faculty could bring the University into disrepute or reflect negatively on the reputation or image of the University.
OUWB Tenured Emeritus/Emerita
Tenured Faculty Emeritus/Emerita are former tenured faculty members at the rank of professor or associate professor who have retired in good standing from their profession after generally at least 10 years of continuous employment with Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB). The medical school awards this designation as an honor based on outstanding contributions to the medical school.
Eligibility
Tenured faculty at the associate professor or professor rank within OUWB School of Medicine with a distinguished record of service and achievements. Tenured faculty who have retired or are retiring are eligible for appointment as emeritus/emerita faculty at their rank at the time of retirement.
Provisions
Tenured Emeritus/Emerita faculty may continue to be involved in the life and community of the medical school, and are provided access to the medical school library. Emeritus/Emerita faculty may serve on standing committees, and are eligible to attend and vote at Faculty Assembly meetings.
Continued Emeritus/Emerita status requires continued personal and professional behavior that is in alignment with the OUWB Professional Code of Conduct, and compliance with medical school policies for conflicts of interest and commitment with any role in medical school activities.
Process
A retiring tenured faculty member may be recommended for Emeritus/Emerita status by the appropriate Department Chair with approval of the Dean of the School of Medicine. Department chairs must submit a written proposal to the Dean outlining the candidate’s record of achievement within OUWB School of Medicine on the forms provided by the Office of Faculty Affairs. The Dean will determine the appropriateness of an Emeritus/Emerita faculty appointment. The determination of the Dean is final. The Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs shall ensure reporting to the School of Medicine’s Committee on Appointments Promotion and Tenure and the Oakland University Board of Trustees for record keeping and for informational purposes only.
The Dean’s Distinguished Professor Award is a permanent, honorific title that acknowledges contributions of employed, full-time, tenured faculty at the rank of Professor, with exceptional records of scholarship, teaching, and service. This designation shall be afforded to awardees who have superior teaching skills that encompass the breadth and depth of their discipline, a distinguished record of public service, and scholarly, creative, and artistic achievements. The title of Dean’s Distinguished Professor is permanent for the duration of a recipient’s service at OUWB and also includes a one-time $1,000 stipend to support professional activities.
One nomination per year may be made by the Department Chair, Vice Chair, or a tenured faculty member within the Department of FMS. Faculty Affairs shall announce the call for nominations in the spring of each calendar year. All nominations shall be evaluated by the Department Chair, the Dean, and the Committee on Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure utilizing a standardized rubric that will examine the nominee’s contributions. A maximum of two awards are allowed on an annual basis. Awardees will be acknowledged at the annual Honors Convocation.
Criteria:
- Tenured appointment at the rank of Professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies
- Minimum of 10 years of employment with OUWB School of Medicine
- Distinguished achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service
- Record of distinction in exhibiting the values of OUWB School of Medicine

Faculty Promotion Training
Eligible faculty members who wish to apply for promotion must attend promotion training and seek the approval of their Department Chair. All faculty members are welcome and encouraged to attend promotion training during their faculty appointment for informational purposes.

OUWB Committees and Faculty Assembly Leadership
OUWB is governed in its internal administration by its faculty through committee service. All members of the faculty as defined in the faculty constitution are entitled to take part in meetings by voice and by vote. Faculty are eligible to participate in standing and ad hoc committees as outlined by the faculty bylaws. Faculty interested in participating in committee service should complete the annual Faculty Committee Interest Survey.

Admissions Interviewers
Interview student applicants of the OUWB School of Medicine. One annual training session is required. Interviewers are asked to participate in a minimum of four interview days per (max 20). Interviews take place on most Fridays and some Thursdays between late August and early March.

Application Screeners
Read application files to help determine which applicants should receive interviews. Applications are online accessible. Application screeners must attend an annual training session and screen five applications every week or every other week from late June through February.

Center for Community Engagement (Compass)
Compass is the center for OUWB community engagement, and focuses on navigating connections with local, regional, national, and global communities. These relationships enable faculty and staff to share their expertise with the community and assist medical students with meeting their learning objectives while identifying the needs of vulnerable populations who are served by our many diverse Compass community partners.

Embark Mentor
Will be responsible for evaluating both written and oral Embark research project presentations at various times during the development of the project. Several of these events result in awarding of recognition and partial scholarships.

PRISM Mentor
Physicians (with a faculty appointment) serve as mentors for the PRISM program, which promotes reflection, wellness, professionalism and career development. Faculty will mentor a group of 25 students over a four-year period of time and will play an important role in the PRISM course. Must be available one afternoon per month.
